Nova 2000 Windability Tester
The Nova 2000 Windability Tester helps to quickly determine the overall quality of the magnet wire insulation. This is done by simulating the stresses experienced by magnet wire during coil winding process. The test is performed by wrapping the wire around a mandrel (non-rotating and mounted onto a crosshead). Both ends of the wire are attached to tension weights. While one end is locked in place, the mandrel moves in the opposite direction, forcing the wire to slide around the mandrel. At the end of the travel, the procedure is reversed and the test cycle repeated. As the numbers of strokes are repeatedly increased, the stresses experienced by the wire increases and results in the failure of the insulation. The insulation failure is detected by a HV fault detection circuit.
Some of the stresses experienced by the magnet wire during the windability test are;
-
sliding friction (lubricity) and heat due to sliding friction
-
abrasion between the wire and mandrel and between wire and wire
-
elongation
-
bending of the wire around the mandrel.
The ability of the wire to withstand these stresses gives an indication of the insulation’s toughness and cure. Low stroke count of the windability test indicates that the enamel may not be properly cured or the enamel formulation is not tough and may not pass some of the standard magnet wire tests such as scrape abrasion, adhesion, flexibility, cure, etc. High strokes count indicates the enamel is properly cured and better able to withstand the stresses experienced during the coil winding processes. By being able to determine the toughness of the insulation through a simulated winding test, enamel and magnet wire manufacturer can improve on its product for the motor and coil winding industry. Windability test:
-
Simulates coil winding process to determine toughness of enamel.
-
Determines the performance (toughness) of enamels of different types of magnet wire.
-
Provides quick determination of wire enamel performance against known reference sample data
-
Simulates coil winding process to produce stressed wire samples for other standard test such as dielectric breakdown, flexibility, etc.
